Guest Blogger Andrew Williams tells us how SplashMaps are ideal for mountain leaders like him. Read on and see how he’s used his to raise money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation whilst recovering himself from a life saving operation.
As a Mountain Leader SplashMaps have been an important and interesting addition to my ‘toolkit’ since they first appeared so when they offered generous donations for people prepared to enter an event and raise money for the British Heart Foundation it excited me as I was recovering from major Cardio Thoracic surgery and had not long started on a Cardiac Rehabilitation course.
Originally I emailed David at SplashMaps explaining that I would love to take up the challenge, however, due to recovering from surgery wouldn’t be able to. He understood my position and told me of the sponsorship money they had available was specifically for the BHF. After nearly two years of being off the hills it was just the encouragement I needed to spur on my recovery.
The challenge was on! A fifteen mile event from Brecon through the lanes up over Peny Fan and back to Brecon.
NHS Physios had got me up and running before passing me to the Cardiac physios at Ammanford Leisure Centre who tailered my training towards getting back on the hill. Then International Mountain Leader and BHF Heartstart Instructor Alan Ward started taking me out onto the hills.
What better support, encouragement and cause could a person wish for?
The day for my challenge came, however, the weather wasn’t as lovely as on my practice walks
The day of my challenge was a real ‘Claggy’ day with plenty of peace and quiet on the hill
The reason for my challenge was a worthy and worthwhile cause the BHF do incredible work in prevention, recovery and research for so many people and its many thanks to SplashMaps for giving me the opportunity to raise money for this incredible organisation.
