It’s no secret. Inspired by the heroic and ingenious stories around escape and evasion maps during World War 2 we decided to steal the idea to make SplashMaps.
We’ve always loved the history behind fabric maps and their use to escape prison camps in occupied Europe in the 1940s. At EVERY show we do there’s someone with a silk map story or a “find” in the attic to share.
We even make maps for those that scramble in the footsteps of the heroes on epic journeys from Italy to Switzerland with Duncan Boar and Tough Mountain.
You can even make your own nowadays right here!
So we were really excited to be around when Barbara Bond’s Book on Great Escapes launched at Stanfords, at a presentation she called “The Power of Maps in the Second World War“.
We love collecting these stories of escape and evasion maps. And here they all come at once thanks to Barbara and her long history with maps including her presidency of the British cartographic society and chairmanship of the Hydrographic Office.
